Dong Van Karst Plateau
Dong Van Karst Plateau is a UNESCO Global Geopark famous for dramatic limestone mountains, deep valleys, mountain passes and ethnic minority villages. It forms the spectacular heart of the Ha Giang Loop.
Sung La Valley is a scenic stop along National Highway 4C on the journey through the Dong Van Karst Plateau.
Surrounded by rugged limestone mountains, the valley stands out for its farmland, traditional rammed-earth houses and seasonal flowers.
The Sung La area is now part of Sa Phin Commune, Tuyen Quang Province.
Sung La lies between high karst mountains, creating a distinctive landscape of small fields, traditional houses and stone fences.
Rather than stopping only for roadside photographs, visitors can spend more time walking through the area and experiencing the atmosphere of the highland villages.
The scenery of Sung La changes throughout the year.
Spring may bring peach, plum and mustard flowers, while autumn and early winter are associated with buckwheat flowers across the wider karst plateau.
In 2026, buckwheat fields across the region are being planted in several stages to extend the flowering period from around October through December.
Located within Sung La Valley, Lung Cam Cultural Village offers visitors a closer look at traditional highland architecture and local life.
The village features rammed-earth houses, yin-yang tiled roofs, stone fences and traditional community spaces.
One of the best-known attractions in Lung Cam is Pao's House, a traditional home used as a filming location for the Vietnamese movie The Story of Pao.
The house reflects traditional architecture of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, with earthen walls, tiled roofs, a stone courtyard and stone fencing.
Sung La is not only about scenery. It is also a place to learn more about the everyday life and cultural traditions of communities living on the karst plateau.
Visitors should respect private homes and farmland and ask permission before taking close-up photographs of local residents.
Spring: A good season for peach, plum and mustard blossoms.

Clear days: Ideal for panoramic views across the valley and surrounding limestone mountains.
Sung La Valley offers a softer contrast to the dramatic mountain passes of the Dong Van Karst Plateau.
Its combination of limestone mountains, farmland, seasonal flowers, traditional houses and local culture makes it a worthwhile stop between Tham Ma Pass and the attractions around Sa Phin and Dong Van.
Enjoy panoramic views over Sung La Valley, where limestone mountains, farmland, traditional rammed-earth houses and highland villages create a distinctive landscape.
During flowering seasons, Sung La becomes especially photogenic with peach, plum, mustard and buckwheat blossoms set against the karst mountains.
